Healthy Weight

Overweight can present problems for older adults and can aggravate  many health issues including heart, blood pressure, diabetes, mobility and musculoskeletal conditions.

Being overweight may not be an issue for major concern as extra weight is considered protective and has been associated with  lower mortality, particularly for those with a chronic disease. The  acceptable  weight range for older adults is higher than those for adults less than 65 years .

Weight loss may result in loss of muscle mass in addition to the normal losses associated with ageing.  Typical weight loss diets are not recommended for older adults.

So what is the best way to manage overweight ? –  Regular Exercise and a Healthy Diet which contains Sufficient  Protein. This  will help to combat the muscle loss and has the added benefit of improving your fitness and well-being.

The Australian Guide to Healthy Eating  and the World Health Organisation (WHO)/ Physical Activity and Older Adults sites can provide you with information to assist in this area.
